     The Lantern Bug, also known as the lanthorn flies or lanternflies, is a beautiful exotic that will blow your mind! One of the lantern`s bug characteristics that makes It stand out in the crowd is its long extended mouth that looks like Pinocchio`s nose! However, even if the resemblance is extraordinary, the lantern bug actually uses the long mouth to feed on plants and trees.
     The extraordinary lantern bug has an astonishing appearance which will surely won`t go unnoticed. The local folklore has even attributed magical powers to this amazing insect! However, these magical powers have not been demonstrated yet, but the lantern bug remains a very interesting insect to observe: it is beautifully colored and shaped, even though it only grows 75 mm in length.  So, as you can imagine, it can be quite difficult to notice this beautiful bug if it stands still or if it runs away. If you want to get really close, do it so it does not observe you.

Lantern bugs are arboreal insects. Therefore, they love large, fruiting trees. Their main area of habitat is the exotic Thailand.


The Lantern Bug mainly feeds on the sap found on the plants and trees which they live on.


Interesting Facts


  • For a long time it has been believed that the Lantern Bug can produce light and that they are similar to glow worms. However, it has been recently discovered that the lantern bug is able to glow in the night thanks to their wing patterns: they are able to reflect light through it and make it seem they are actually glowing!
  • There are over 20 species of lantern bugs that have been discovered; while they are all similar, some of them did not grow the famous extended mouth. However, it is very likely that there are still unrecorded species of lantern bugs!
  • The lantern bug has a beautiful “pair of bright red compound eyes” which is used to show alert and erect stance!
