Description
They may look like creatures from another universe, but these multi-coloured sea slugs are in fact one of the marvels of our oceans.

Nudibranchs are soft-bodied marine molluscs that shed their shells after their larval stage, revealing their brightly-coloured exteriors.
Sea slug is a common name used for several different groups of saltwater snails that either lack a shell or have only an internal shell.
The sea slug is also commonly referred to as a sea cucumber, mainly because of the of the sea slug's shape and the fact that it is normally found on coral or rocks usually being very still, making it look like a type of aquatic vegetable.
Some nudibranchs have toxins which can render their predators incapacitated.
Others can release acid from their skin when irritated.
There are more than 3,000 described species of nudibranchs and they occur in oceans worldwide including both tropics and Antarctica.

They can be found crawling over rocks, seaweeds, sponges, corals and many other substrates
They live in all levels of saltwater but their greatest size and variation occurs in warm, shallow waters.
Due to their motionless nature, sea slugs are often very exposed and are therefore popular prey for a wide variety of predatory animals in the oceans. Crabs, lobsters, fish and even humans are among the animals that prey on the fleshy sea slug.
Most nudibranchs are simultaneous hermaphrodites, meaning individuals have both male and female reproductive organs—and they can deliver and accept sperm at the same time.

They can also store sperm from several mates and choose which ones to use in fertilizing their eggs by digesting the sperm they don’t want.
A new study finds that the ostentatious sea slug, or nudibranch, one species of this marine invertebrate cuts its own penis off after mating and regrows a new reproductive organ within 24 hours, whereupon it’s ready to mate again.

Ayami Sekizawa, of Osaka City University in Japan and lead author on the study, speculated that by removing their penis from their mate, the sea slugs were increasing the chances that their partner would use their sperm to fertilize its eggs, rather than a competitor’s sperm.
“If the sea slug left the penis in the mating partner’s female organ, it could not remove sperm of preceding mates ”.

Size: 0.6-30cm (0.25-12in)
Life Span: 1-4 years

Habitat
Shallow and deep oceans, sea, warm waters.

Diet
The sea slug is a herbivorous animals and feeds on plankton and decaying matter on the ocean floor, along with grazing on the rocks and coral reefs for algae.
By munching on the decomposing plant matter on the ocean floor, the sea slug is of great benefit to every marine environment where the sea inhabits.

Breeding
The sea slug is a hermaphrodite, meaning that the sea slug has both male and female reproductive organs. Sea slugs release eggs into the water in ribbon-like sticky clusters which can contain thousands of eggs but usually much less.
The eggs are fertilized and the sea slug larvae (the baby sea slugs) soon develop and become bigger, after hatching from their sticky eggs.

Interesting facts
• The sea slug is also commonly referred to as a sea cucumber, mainly because of the of the sea slug's shape and the fact that it is normally found on coral or rocks usually being very still.
• The name 'nudibranchs' derives from Latin and Greek and means 'naked gills'.
• Scientists believe they may have evolved such extraordinary anatomy as a form of camouflage to mimick their surroundings and avoid predators.Even their egg masses are often red, pink, orange or any other colour depending on the species.
• Some nudibranchs have toxins which can render their predators incapacitated
• Studies finds that the ostentatious sea slug, one species of this marine invertebrate cuts its own penis off after mating and regrows a new reproductive organ.
